The New Zealand government has announced the distribution of regional infrastructure fund (RIF) loans to support vital air services across the islands. These loans, part of a NZD30 million package, include a significant NZD17.2 million for Air Chathams to refinance existing debt, alongside funds allocated to Sounds Air and Island Aviation for fleet upgrades and maintenance.
This financial support aims to sustain regional connectivity as the industry faces increased operational pressures. Officials emphasize that maintaining these routes is crucial for community access and essential services, especially during challenging economic periods. Transport Minister James Meager stated that losing these routes could significantly impact communities' access to the rest of the country.
Air Chathams primarily connects Chatham Island with mainland New Zealand and from Auckland, while Sounds Air services the Wellington region and other South Island communities. Island Aviation operates short-haul routes, providing important connectivity between Waiheke Island and nearby destinations. These investments are viewed as vital for ensuring regional stability, with the government considering adjustments to loan conditions if necessary.
