The Nigerian aviation sector has undergone a significant transformation over the past hundred years, starting with the landing of the first aircraft in Kano in 1925. As Nigeria prepares to celebrate its centenary of aviation on December 1, 2025, the Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development is organizing events in Abuja's African Hall, showcasing the industry’s milestones. Minister Festus Keyamo expressed pride in Nigeria's evolution from a regional aviation hub to a leader in Africa’s air transport landscape. During the celebration, 40 pioneers in aviation will be honored for their contributions, highlighting Nigeria's commitment to safety, infrastructure, and growth. The country has dedicated investments toward modernizing airports in Lagos, Abuja, Kano, and beyond, and plans to launch a new national carrier to enhance connectivity.
Looking ahead, Nigeria aims to expand intra-African connectivity, develop greener aviation technologies, and boost tourism through improved air services. The African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) and initiatives like SAATM offer opportunities for Nigeria to leverage regional cooperation and competitiveness. The sector's future will also depend on continued focus on human capital development, with investments in training and international partnerships to sustain growth. As Nigeria enters its next century of aviation, the sector stands as a testament to decades of pioneer efforts and strategic investments, with prospects for even greater achievements on the horizon.
