The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has awarded an air operator certificate (AOC) to Binani Air Global Services, signaling a major development in the country's aviation industry. The certification ceremony, held in Abuja on March 17, was attended by industry officials and marked a historic milestone for Nigeria's airline sector.
Founded by Aishatu Binani Dahiru, a former senator, Binani Air is notable as Nigeria's first airline to be managed by a woman. The airline's approval to begin scheduled operations follows a rigorous certification process, which the director-general of civil aviation, Chris Najomo, praised for its thoroughness and the airline’s determination in meeting all regulatory standards.
Industry Implications and Future Outlook
Najomo emphasized that obtaining the AOC is only the initial step in a demanding phase that requires ongoing adherence to safety and operational standards. He cautioned, “The airline’s management needs to prioritize proper planning, professionalism, and continuous adherence to safety and operational standards as there is no room for shortcuts in the industry.”
Based at Lagos Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Binani Air has previously held an AOC since July 2024 for non-scheduled services, and this new certification enables it to expand into scheduled flight operations, strengthening Nigeria’s aviation landscape.
Overall, this development highlights the nation’s progress in fostering gender diversity and advancing its commercial aviation capabilities, with expectations of increased connectivity across Africa and beyond.
