Norway is advancing its efforts to develop sustainable regional aviation by launching an international test project involving hybrid-electric aircraft. The initiative, signed by the Bristow Group, Electra, Avinor, and CAA Norway, aims to commence test flights of Electra’s EL9 aircraft across Norwegian airspace in mid-2027. The nine-seat aircraft is designed for short runways and challenging terrains, emphasizing lower emissions and operational efficiency. The program includes multiple testing phases at smaller airports and unconventional sites, with the goal of integrating these aircraft into regular service in remote and regional areas.

This project builds on Norway's established role as a pioneering environment for zero-emission aircraft testing, dating back to April 2024. Industry experts like Dave Stepanek of Bristow and Dinaa Siegel of Electra note that regulatory frameworks and infrastructure will be key to operational success. Norway's strategic focus on a regulatory sandbox environment facilitates the safe adoption of hybrid and electric aircraft, positioning the country as a global leader in sustainable aviation testing. This initiative reflects Norway's broader vision of enabling innovative and environmentally friendly regional mobility solutions, backed by government support and industry collaboration.
