Norway has completed its first full-scale testing of electric aircraft operating within controlled airspace, demonstrating their safety and operational viability. Over a six-month period, a total of 126 flights were conducted with the ALIA CX300 electric cargo aircraft, covering seven Norwegian airports. The project, involving BETA Technologies and Bristow Group, has shown that electric aircraft can operate safely alongside traditional aircraft, provided adjustments are made to airspace design and regulations.

According to Jan Gunnar Pedersen, Executive Vice President of Avinor Air Navigation Services, the results open new opportunities such as more direct routes, increased flexibility, and lower noise levels. However, the current airspace infrastructure, designed for aircraft with high climb performance, limits the range and operational flexibility of electric aircraft. Pedersen emphasized the importance of developing dedicated 'e-routes' tailored to electric aircraft to maximize their advantages.

Bringing these innovative aircraft into broader commercial use will require evolving regulatory frameworks, particularly around energy reserves and alternate airports, as their different characteristics may impose operational constraints. Pedersen noted that safety remains paramount, and collaboration among authorities, operators, manufacturers, and infrastructure providers is essential for success.

Norway’s government-led international test arena aims to accelerate the adoption of low- and zero-emission aviation technologies. The initiative supports the practical testing and development of regulatory policies, managing the transition toward sustainable air transport.
