NXTClean Fuels has announced a partnership with Topsoe to develop what will be the largest greenfield sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) facility in the United States. Located in Port Westward, Oregon, the facility aims to begin operations by 2029, producing up to 50,000 barrels of renewable diesel and SAF per day, which equates to approximately 750 million gallons annually.

The project involves Topsoe providing its suite of proprietary technologies, including HydroFlex™, SynCOR™, and H2bridge™, along with catalysts, to produce low-carbon fuels through innovative processing. A key feature of the plant will be the H2bridge™ technology, which recycles biogenic propane and off-gas to generate low-carbon hydrogen, significantly reducing the overall carbon footprint of the fuels produced.

Chris Efird, CEO and Chairperson of NXTClean Fuels, emphasized that these technologies will make their fuels among the cleanest SAF and renewable diesel options globally. Henrik Rasmussen from Topsoe highlighted the project’s role in increasing SAF supply in the U.S. and supporting the country's decarbonization goals in aviation.

This development aligns with international forecasts that SAF production will more than double in 2025, reaching 2.1 million tons, according to the International Air Transport Association (IATA). Overall, the project represents a significant step toward sustainable aviation and the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions from the industry.
