The Sultanate of Oman has reported an increase in both international and domestic air passengers during the first two months of 2026, according to official statistics. The growth comes amid regional flight cancellations and restrictions, which have made Omani airspace a preferred alternative route for many travelers in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) area.
Data from the National Centre of Statistics and Information indicates that international passenger arrivals rose by 2 percent to over 1.13 million, with departures increasing by 1.2 percent to approximately 1.11 million. Domestic flights also saw a significant increase of 7.3 percent, reaching over 173,000 passengers.
Regional and International Impacts
Despite prevailing regional challenges, Oman has maintained its role as a regional aviation hub. Notably, transit passenger numbers surged by over 377 percent, reflecting an increase in transit activities amid global and regional aviation dynamics.
"Oman's partially accessible airspace has strengthened its position as a key link in regional air travel," said an industry analyst.
The number of international arriving and departing flights also increased slightly, reaffirming Oman’s strategic aviation importance in the Gulf region and beyond. This continued passenger flow demonstrates resilience in Oman’s aviation sector, supported by the country’s active efforts to accommodate regional needs despite ongoing restrictions.
The top nationalities departing from Oman continue to include Indians, Omanis, Pakistanis, Bangladeshis, Egyptians, and British nationals, revealing the diverse international connectivity maintained by Omani airports. Overall, the country's air travel sector shows signs of recovery and sustained growth into 2026, bolstered by its strategic location and contingency measures.
