Pakistan has completed the privatization of its national airline, Pakistan International Airlines (PIA), by selling a 75% stake to a consortium led by Arif Habib for Rs 135 billion. The auction was conducted transparently in Islamabad, with all three pre-qualified bidders depositing sealed bids. The bids were publicly opened, and Arif Habib submitted the highest bid, ultimately offering Rs 135 billion, which went unchallenged by the competitors, surpassing the initial reference price of Rs 100 billion.
The government has announced that the successful bidders will have 90 days to acquire the remaining 25% of shares, further consolidating their ownership. The new investor is expected to commit an additional Rs 80 billion investment over the next five years. This sale marks a major milestone for Pakistan, ending a period of decades of mismanagement that led to heavy financial losses and liabilities exceeding Rs 654 billion.
Implications and Future Prospects
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif emphasized the transparency of the process, describing it as Pakistan’s largest-ever transaction, and thanked all officials involved. The sale is expected to help stabilize PIA, restore its reputation, and provide resources for reinvestment into the airline’s operations. Previously, a similar bid had failed to meet the necessary reserve price, but the latest auction successfully attracted a high bid, signaling renewed investor confidence in PIA’s future.
"The privatization of PIA through a transparent process will pave the way for its revival and growth,"said an official involved in the sale, highlighting the significance of this transaction for Pakistan's aviation sector.
Overall, this privatization represents a critical step towards modernizing and restructuring Pakistan’s aviation industry with international investment, aiming to reverse years of decline and enhance operational efficiency.
