A Pakistani investment group has secured the highest bid to acquire a majority stake in Pakistan International Airlines (PIA), marking one of the country's largest privatization efforts. The Arif Habib Group offered approximately US$482 million for a 75% share in the airline, with options to purchase the remaining 25% shortly thereafter. The auction, broadcast live, saw participation from three local bidders amid ongoing government reforms.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif emphasized the importance of transparency in the process, given its historic scale for the nation. The successful bid exceeds the previous year's offer of only US$36 million, reflecting renewed confidence in PIA's potential after years of financial struggles and mismanagement. The sale aims to reduce state burdens and revive the airline’s operational efficiency.

Background and Significance

PIA, once a symbol of national pride with pioneering international routes, has faced mounting losses, safety concerns, and reputation issues over recent years. Following a deadly 2020 crash and subsequent bans from EU, UK, and US markets, the airline’s fleet has been reduced, with only half of its aircraft actively flying. The privatization process seeks to restore competitiveness and safety standards, attracting private investment and cutting fiscal losses.

The government’s efforts follow a previous failed privatization attempt, highlighting the urgency of reform. The new sponsor is expected to infuse capital and management expertise to modernize the airline, ultimately aiming for enhanced service quality and financial stability. Authorities are optimistic that the deal will set a precedent for further reforms across other state enterprises.
