Palau International Airport has been awarded funding from the U.S. Trade and Development Agency (USTDA) to undertake significant upgrades to its aviation infrastructure. The project aims to revise the airport’s master plan, including assessing the extension of the runway to accommodate larger aircraft, which is vital for supporting Palau's future economic growth and regional connectivity.
Officials from Palau highlighted that expanding the airport’s infrastructure, particularly the Roll-On/Roll-Off (ROR) facilities, will facilitate increased tourism, trade, and access to essential services. Palau’s Minister Charles Obichang emphasized the importance of safe and sustainable air connectivity, noting that USTDA’s support provides the technical expertise necessary for attracting larger investments.
Thomas Hardy, USTDA’s Deputy Director, underscored the partnership's strategic importance, stating that it reinforces Palau's sovereignty and regional cooperation within the Indo-Pacific. The funding is expected to enable the airport to handle larger aircraft and increased traffic, contributing to the nation’s development goals and regional stability.
This assistance represents a vital step in strengthening Palau’s aviation infrastructure, ensuring long-term resilience and enhanced connectivity for the island nation.
