Malaysia’s national oil and gas corporation, PETRONAS, has successfully delivered the country's first blended sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA). This milestone marks a significant advancement in Malaysia's effort to reduce carbon emissions within its aviation industry.
The SAF, which is certified by the International Sustainability & Carbon Certification (ISCC) and complies with CORSIA-eligible standards, was blended locally at PETRONAS’ facilities. It was transported directly to KLIA via the Malaysian Refining Company’s multi-product pipeline, ensuring a reliable supply chain for this emerging fuel type.
Supporting Malaysia’s Sustainable Future
Ahmad Adly Alias, Vice President of Refining, Marketing and Trading at PETRONAS, emphasized that the company recognizes its role in enabling Malaysia’s net-zero ambitions. "Decarbonising the aviation industry requires reliable pathways, and SAF represents one of the most immediate solutions available today," he stated.
The project signifies PETRONAS' strategic focus on building in-house capabilities in technology, infrastructure, and talent development to deliver sustainable, cost-effective fuel solutions not only for current needs but also for future growth.
This pilot initiative reflects a broader industry push towards renewable fuels as a key component in reducing aviation’s carbon footprint, supporting global efforts towards climate change mitigation.
Moving forward, PETRONAS aims to expand its SAF production and distribution, contributing to regional and global decarbonisation efforts and positioning Malaysia as a leader in sustainable aviation practices.
