Philippine Airlines (PAL) has announced plans to resume direct flights to India, with new routes from Manila to Delhi and Mumbai scheduled to launch in December, subject to government approval. The airline intends to operate three weekly flights to Delhi and four weekly flights to Mumbai using Airbus A321neos with 168 seats, marking a significant expansion of connectivity between the two countries.

The new routes aim to nearly double the existing nonstop capacity between the Philippines and India and will provide the only nonstop service connecting Manila and Mumbai. PAL’s president, Richard Nuttall, emphasized that these routes will bolster the airline’s network and facilitate increased business and leisure travel, supporting economic ties.

Market Impact and Competition

The move positions PAL to compete directly with Air India, which launched its Delhi-Mumbai service in October 2025. Air India's flight has grown to daily operation in the summer of 2026, offering around 78,960 seats seasonally. With PAL’s expanded schedule, combined weekly capacity on the India-Philippines corridor will total approximately 4,980 seats, reflecting robust market growth. Market data shows a rising trend in passenger traffic between India and the Philippines, with Delhi and Mumbai being the primary origin points.

Historical Context and Future Outlook

Historically, PAL attempted flights to Delhi in 2011, but the service was discontinued shortly after due to weak demand. The airline had plans to reintroduce services in 2019 but delayed the launch amid geopolitical tensions in the region. As PAL prepares to join the Oneworld alliance next year, the new services are expected to enhance regional ties and create new opportunities for travelers and businesses alike.
