Sun Group and Changi Airports International (CAI) have entered into a strategic partnership to transform Phu Quoc International Airport into Vietnam’s premier "airport destination." This initiative aims to combine advanced aviation infrastructure with tourism, retail, and entertainment options to boost regional connectivity and competitiveness.
The collaboration includes CAI providing advisory support to enhance airport operations, improve service standards, and increase air connectivity, aligning with Vietnam's plan to position Phu Quoc as a leading gateway in the Asia-Pacific region. The project equates to a significant step forward, especially ahead of the APEC 2027 Summit, which is expected to attract numerous international dignitaries and visitors.
Passenger traffic at Phu Quoc Airport hit approximately six million in 2025, and with upcoming expansion plans, capacity will increase to 24 million passengers annually, with the potential to reach 50 million in the long term. These developments include building a new runway and Terminal 2, supported by a government-approved scheme.
Singapore Changi Airport, often regarded as an industry benchmark for excellence, serves as an inspiration for the project, emphasizing the airport’s role as a key part of the travel experience rather than merely a transit point. Experts from both organizations assert that airports play a vital role in shaping first impressions, influencing economic growth and long-term regional development.
