Bangladesh's private aviation industry has been struggling for over three decades due to policy hurdles, high taxation, and unfair competition from the national airline. Despite significant investments, many private airlines and helicopter operators have ceased operations, with only a few remaining in service.

Experts and industry insiders attribute the sector’s decline to structural weaknesses, including inadequate human resource development and fragmented regulations. Private operators face challenges such as limited access to affordable financing, outdated policies, and a perception of the industry as an elitist business prompting heavy taxes and restrictions.

Industry Challenges and Future Outlook

The secretary general of the Aviation Operators Association of Bangladesh (AOAB) highlighted that unfair competition, particularly from Biman Bangladesh Airlines, has been a decisive factor in the failures of private carriers such as GMG Airlines. He emphasized that unless policy reforms are implemented to create a level playing field and support industry growth, private aviation remains at risk of further deterioration.

Addressing these issues requires a concerted effort by policymakers to update regulations, reduce taxes, and foster an environment conducive to sustainable growth of the sector. Strengthening training and human resource development is also vital for creating a resilient aviation ecosystem capable of meeting the country’s growing passenger and cargo demand.

Overall, unless effective measures are taken, the private aviation sector in Bangladesh is likely to continue its decline, with significant economic implications for the country’s connectivity and development prospects.
