Purdue University recently hosted its first Space and Aviation Alumni Reunion, gathering industry leaders, alumni, and academic experts from November 6 to 7 in West Lafayette. The event aimed to foster dialogue on groundbreaking developments in space and aviation technology.
The reunion featured discussions with top aerospace companies such as SpaceX, Boeing, and Rolls-Royce, highlighting current industry trends and future prospects. Notably, Sebastien Vigneron, CEO of Wisk Aero, delivered the William E. Boeing Distinguished Lecture, sharing insights into the company's vision for accessible, sustainable air mobility, including autonomous electric air taxis.
Industry and academic representatives from organizations like UP.Partners, King’s Queue Design, Auburn University, and Textron Aviation participated in a series of panels addressing space operations, environmental sustainability, and aircraft systems. A notable segment included a fireside chat with Purdue President Mung Chiang and SpaceX’s Bill Gerstenmaier at Purdue Airport’s Hangar 5.
Attendees also engaged in discussions about advancements in aviation automation. Brandon Abel, a United Airlines flight test captain, provided perspectives on the evolving role of automation and autonomy in flight operations. The event was organized in collaboration with Purdue’s College of Engineering and Polytechnic Institute, emphasizing the university’s role as a hub for aerospace innovation.
