Qantas has announced a series of major updates to its fleet and passenger services. The airline plans to launch a new Economy Plus cabin class in February 2026, offering passengers 40% more legroom and priority services across selected aircraft types, including Airbus A321XLR, A220, and Boeing 737. Current aircraft will be retrofitted to include this new cabin, with some already equipped, starting with Airbus models.
This enhancement aims to improve passenger satisfaction and generate additional revenue, especially for high-tier frequent flyers who will receive complimentary access to the new cabins. These upgrades are part of Qantas's broader strategy to boost domestic and short-haul international routes, aligning with their growth objectives.
Market and Fleet Outlook
The airline's recent market update indicates anticipated growth in domestic revenue of about 3% in the first half of 2026, driven by strong demand from leisure and resource sectors. International revenue is expected to grow modestly at 2 to 3 percent amidst ongoing demand, supported by the return of Airbus A380 aircraft from extended grounding. However, geopolitical concerns remain a factor that could influence fuel prices and overall financial performance.
Progress on Airbus A350-1000ULR
Regarding long-haul capabilities, Qantas is progressing with its Airbus A350-1000ULR aircraft for Project Sunrise, with key components assembled and preparations for flight testing scheduled to begin early 2026. Delivery is targeted for late 2026 after several delays, with crew familiarization and international nonstop flights to commence early 2027, connecting Sydney to London and New York.
