Riyadh Air, the Saudi Arabian airline, has taken a significant step towards its commercial launch by executing its first aircraft lease agreement with AviLease for a Boeing 787-9. The aircraft's delivery is expected in the fourth quarter of 2025, supporting the airline's strategy to gradually expand its fleet and network.
Coinciding with this development, Riyadh Air began limited, invitation-only flights from Riyadh to London Heathrow on October 26 as part of its phased "Pathway to Perfect" readiness plan. These initial operations utilize a training aircraft and aim to refine procedures, service, and reliability before opening up to the general public.
Strategic Fleet and Network Expansion
The lease of the Boeing 787-9 allows Riyadh Air to increase its long-haul capacity and test operational capabilities in a controlled manner. This model supports the airline's goal to establish itself as a premium carrier, with a focus on network development and partnerships. The airline aims to compete with Saudi Arabia's established carrier, Saudia, by offering enhanced service and schedule reliability.
"We are pleased to complete our first aircraft lease with AviLease as we continue building a young, fuel-efficient fleet ahead of our commercial launch. The Boeing 787 is a highly capable aircraft that will support delivering a world-class travel experience," said Adam Boukadida, CFO of Riyadh Air.
The leasing of a single Boeing 787-9 provides the airline with flexible deployment options, allowing early access to long-haul routes and capacity in key markets like London. This strategic move reduces startup risks and validates operational procedures before full network deployment.
Future Outlook and Passenger Impact
In the initial phase, passengers will experience limited schedule options, primarily through invitation-only flights. The phased approach aims to ensure operational excellence, including schedule stability and enhanced passenger amenities, before opening services to broader markets. Once the airline's network is fully operational, travelers can expect more nonstop options and improved premium services, benefiting from the aircraft's passenger comfort features like lower cabin altitude, better humidity, and quieter cabins.
As the airline continues its development, the introduction of the Boeing 787-9 is expected to increase utilization, revenue streams, and slot retention at high-demand airports like Heathrow. This sets the groundwork for future network expansion and airline growth, positioning Riyadh Air as a new premium alternative in the region.
