Riyadh Air, the new national carrier of Saudi Arabia, has commenced its inaugural flight to Kuala Lumpur, marking its entry into Southeast Asia. The airline launched the service on July 30, 2026, as part of a broader strategy to rapidly expand its international network, aiming to serve over 100 destinations worldwide by 2030. The route operates three times weekly using Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners, connecting Riyadh (RUH) to Kuala Lumpur (KUL). The airline's fleet is still small but ambitious, with the new route joining services to Málaga and Dhaka as part of its aggressive expansion plan.
The airline, backed by the Saudi Public Investment Fund, seeks to position Riyadh as a major global hub for connecting passengers across Europe, Asia, and beyond. Riyadh Air's CEO, Tony Douglas, emphasized the importance of the new route in strengthening the airline’s network and boosting trade and tourism between Saudi Arabia and Southeast Asia. This strategic move pits Riyadh against established Gulf carriers such as Emirates, Qatar Airways, and Etihad, which dominate the connecting traffic in the region.
The aircraft used for these flights, the Boeing 787-9, features four cabin classes, ranging from Business Elite to Economy, providing a tailored experience for different passenger segments. The airline's distinctive deep indigo livery has become a recognizable symbol of its fresh identity. Despite its limited fleet, Riyadh Air aims to make rapid progress in the global aviation market, driven by Saudi Arabia’s broader economic and infrastructure development plans.
