Riyadh Air has introduced a premium cabin concept on its Boeing 787-9 fleet that aims to combine luxury with efficiency by offering a suite of features typically found in first class, but at a business-class price point. The airline’s innovative interior design emphasizes technological sophistication and cultural symbolism, positioning itself as a disruptor in the competitive long-haul market.

The airline has opted for a two-class-plus layout, focusing on high-margin business travel while optimizing the limited physical space of the 787-9. The flight experience centers around 24 custom-designed business class suites utilizing the Safran Unity platform, with enclosed walls reaching 52 inches for privacy. The front row features four ‘business elite’ suites, with larger screens and convertible configurations for shared seating and sleep arrangements, aiming to bridge the gap between high-end business travel and first class comfort.

Innovative Design and Technology

The interior design incorporates the ‘canopy twist’ motif, inspired by Riyadh’s modern architecture, developed by PriestmanGoode. Each suite includes wired high-speed connectivity with USB-C and USB-A ports, aligning with Saudi mandates for future-proof charging infrastructure. Passengers are also treated to the Euphony audio system developed with Devialet, which uses cabin noise compensation technology to neutralize engine hum, allowing for headphone-free personal sound experiences powered by built-in speakers in the headrests.

“This cabin represents a new standard in luxury, combining cutting-edge technology with cultural influences,”

The cabin’s aesthetic echoes the Saudi landscape, with a color palette transitioning from deep indigos in premium areas to softer lavender in economy, fostering a sense of calm and growth. The aircraft’s design philosophy focuses on yield management, offering high-end amenities to corporate travelers while maintaining efficient capacity and range, consistent with Saudi Vision 2030’s goal to transform Riyadh into a global aviation hub.

Future plans include expanding to larger Airbus platforms, such as the A350-1000, which may eventually feature a traditional first class product. Riyadh Air aims to connect over 100 destinations worldwide by the end of the decade, establishing itself as a new benchmark for luxury in the region.
