Ryanair to Cease Zagreb-Thessaloniki Route Due to Fees and Airport Charges

Ryanair has announced it will cease its seasonal service between Zagreb, Croatia, and Thessaloniki, Greece, citing high airport charges and fees as the primary reason. The airline's decision affects a route that has been a key connection, especially during the summer months when up to six weekly flights were operated. The route's suspension is part of broader cancellations planned for this winter, which include other European destinations.

The carrier criticized the escalation of charges at Thessaloniki Airport, managed by Fraport Greece, despite the Greek government’s reduction of airport fees by 75% starting November 2024. Ryanair pointed out that Fraport Greece has continued to increase charges, now 66% higher than pre-Covid levels, making the winter service unprofitable.

Fraport Greece's Response

Fraport Greece stated that the decision to reduce winter flights at Thessaloniki Airport was solely based on Ryanair’s commercial strategy and profitability considerations, denying that airport charges played a role. The company highlighted the airport’s significance, serving over 33 countries and 93 destinations, and noted it hosts more than forty airlines, including Ryanair.

"The decision regarding Thessaloniki Airport’s reduced winter operation is based on Ryanair’s business model," said Fraport Greece. "We respect Ryanair’s choices and remain committed to supporting regional connectivity."

Prior to the suspension, the route was among Zagreb’s busiest unserved services in Europe, providing vital regional connectivity. Despite the withdrawal, authorities and industry stakeholders emphasize the importance of the Thessaloniki route and continue to work towards sustainable aviation operations in the region.
