Safran Helicopter Engines has commenced assembly of the first TG600 turbogenerator, a 600-kilowatt unit intended for the hybrid-electric EL-9 aircraft developed by Electra.aero. The assembly of this core component marks a significant step in integrating hybrid propulsion systems into short-takeoff-and-landing (STOL) aircraft, which aim to revolutionize urban mobility.
The TG600 is based on Safran's Arrano engine platform and will be instrumental in powering the nine-seater Electra EL-9. This hybrid configuration seeks to combine electrical and conventional aircraft propulsion technologies to enhance efficiency and reduce emissions. The assembly process underscores Safran's ongoing commitment to advancing innovative propulsion solutions for the emerging advanced air mobility sector.
Focus on Hybrid Propulsion and Urban Mobility
Electra.aero, supported by Safran's technology, is actively developing the EL-9 to operate as an eSTOL aircraft, intended for regional and urban transportation markets. The partnership highlights the aviation industry's broader move towards sustainable and electrified flight options, with a focus on short-range mobility solutions. The successful start of turbo-generator assembly underscores a key milestone in the aircraft’s development timeline, bringing it closer to operational testing and certification.
