Salvador Bahia Airport (SSA), which has been part of VINCI Airports’ global network since 2018, has announced a pioneering initiative in Brazil’s aviation sector. As the country's first airport to provide Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) for scheduled commercial flights, it is now supplying SAF for daily operations by Gol Linhas Aéreas and LATAM Airlines Brasil. These flights utilize a blend comprising 10 percent SAF, produced from used cooking oil, and 90 percent conventional jet fuel, starting this November.

This development marks a significant milestone in Brazil’s efforts to decarbonise its aviation industry. The move to supply SAF aligns with broader global and national commitments to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and promote sustainable energy use. Salvador Bahia’s achievement underscores the airport’s innovative leadership and its commitment to environmental sustainability.

The SAF used at Salvador Bahia is distributed by Vibra, and the fuel conforms with international sustainability standards, effectively lowering lifecycle greenhouse gas emissions compared to traditional jet fuels. This initiative not only supports the decarbonisation of domestic air travel but also positions Salvador Bahia Airport as a regional leader in adopting environmentally responsible aviation practices.

Brazil’s SAF is formulated from sustainable sources such as used cooking oil, and the move to increase its use nationwide is viewed as an essential step towards achieving industry-wide emission reduction targets. The efforts of Salvador Bahia Airport exemplify how strategic use of renewable fuels can facilitate the energy transition within the aviation sector, contributing to both local and global climate goals.
