Sarawak is preparing for a comprehensive overhaul of its aviation industry, with major developments planned for 2025. This includes infrastructure upgrades such as extending runway lengths at key airports and the construction of new facilities, positioning Sarawak as a regional aviation hub. The state is also transitioning its Rural Air Services from MASwings to the newly established AirBorneo, which aims to strengthen connectivity within Borneo and beyond.

Minister Datuk Seri Lee Kim Shin highlighted that the move to establish AirBorneo as the primary rural carrier offers greater control over vital air routes, especially in remote areas. The government emphasizes safety and regulatory compliance throughout this transition, with ongoing discussions with the Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia to ensure a seamless handover.

In addition, progress on major projects such as the New Kuching International Airport and runway extensions at Limbang and Lawas airports reflects the commitment to improving regional connectivity. New routes linking Sarawak with major Malaysian cities and cross-border destinations in Kalimantan have been introduced or are planned, expanding the state’s air network.

International collaboration has also been a focus, with visits to Airbus in Toulouse and participation in global forums to adopt best practices in aircraft technology, safety, and sustainability. The government also engaged in aviation planning discussions with Indonesia as part of regional cooperation efforts. Looking forward, Sarawak aims to prioritize safety, infrastructure, talent development, and innovative, sustainable growth in its aviation strategy.

Throughout her tenure, MASwings served Sarawak’s interior communities with dedication, a legacy now to be continued by AirBorneo. The overall message from the ministry is clear: Sarawak is setting its own course to become a self-reliant and resilient regional aviation hub, with the runway and plans firmly in place for the future.
