Sarawak's AirBorneo has commenced operations with an initial focus on rural air services, with plans to expand into regional commercial flights. The Sarawak government is conducting a comprehensive study on the next phase of the airline's development, including the procurement of suitable jets to serve future regional routes scheduled to begin around July.
Transport Minister Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin stated that the government’s current ownership of AirBorneo is an interim measure following its transfer from MASwings. The airline operates under a dual mandate: providing subsidised rural air services under a Public Service Obligation (PSO) scheme, and later developing regional commercial routes.
He emphasized that decisions regarding aircraft types and business models depend on thorough studies by industry experts. The airline's first flight, operated by a DHC6-400 aircraft, marked a significant milestone, with plans to introduce regional flights once regulatory and technical analyses are completed.
Officials also highlighted that the airline’s future expansion will involve collaborating closely with other carriers to improve service quality. The development aligns with Sarawak’s broader efforts to enhance transportation infrastructure and connectivity within the state, fostering economic growth and accessibility.
Overall, AirBorneo's strategic planning underscores the state’s commitment to strengthening its aviation sector and providing better air links for remote communities and regional destinations.
