The SATA Group, a regional government-owned airline company based in the Azores, is emphasizing fleet stability and financial resilience as it advances its plans for privatization of Azores Airlines. The group operates two airlines: SATA Air Açores and SATA Internacional-Azores Airlines, with distinct operational roles—connectivity within the Azores and longer-range flights, respectively.

SATA Air Açores primarily operates De Havilland Canada Dash 8-200s and Dash 8-400s, linking the nine main islands of the archipelago. The airline is focusing on improving reliability amidst rapidly changing weather conditions, which pose operational challenges. Meanwhile, Azores Airlines is preparing for privatization, with interest from multiple investors, and aims to strengthen connectivity with destinations such as Cape Verde, Europe, and North America.

Privatization and Fleet Updates

The company is undergoing a divestment process, with six entities invited to submit non-binding bids for at least 75% ownership. The airline’s fleet includes leased Airbus A320 family aircraft—two A320ceos, two A320neos, two A321neos—and three A321LRs. Limitations on fleet changes are expected over the next 12-24 months, including the planned phase-out of one A320ceo. No new aircraft acquisitions are currently planned.

"The strategic priorities of the two airlines reflect their distinct roles within SATA Group," said a company spokesperson, highlighting the focus on operational resilience and market expansion.

Both airlines have shown financial growth in early 2026, with SATA Air Açores reporting a net profit increase to €1.3 million, and Azores Airlines improving net results by approximately €3.9 million despite flat revenues. These gains are attributed to stronger unit revenues and disciplined capacity management.

Looking ahead, the group remains committed to fleet and operational stability, with ongoing plans to navigate the privatization process while maintaining service quality and connectivity.
