The search for a new chief executive officer (CEO) of Air India is nearing its conclusion, with two prominent candidates emerging from the industry. Singapore Airlines executive Vinod Kannan and Air India’s commercial head Nipun Aggarwal are the leading contenders, according to sources familiar with the matter.

The move comes after reports that Campbell Wilson, the current CEO, resigned last month amid ongoing losses and increased regulatory challenges faced by the airline. Tata Sons, the majority owner of Air India, is reportedly considering both Kannan and Aggarwal, but has not yet made a final decision.

Background and Context

Singapore Airlines maintains a strategic stake of approximately 25% in Air India. The airline is currently tackling issues such as heavy financial losses, operational disruptions due to regional conflicts, and heightened safety and regulatory scrutiny following a fatal crash last year.

"The leadership change is a critical step in stabilizing and transforming Air India’s operations,"

said a source close to the discussions.

Vinod Kannan, who is the senior vice-president of sales and marketing at Singapore Airlines, previously served as the CEO of Vistara, a joint venture between Tata and Singapore Airlines that was merged into Air India. Kannan's career began in 2001 with Singapore Airlines, and he has held various roles across the airline.

Nipun Aggarwal, who joined Air India in January 2022 following Tata’s takeover from the Indian government, has been credited with playing a key part in the airline’s transformation efforts. He has an extensive background in investment banking and has contributed significantly to Tata Group’s corporate restructuring initiatives.

These developments occur as Air India grapples with operational and financial hurdles, including increased costs due to international regional conflicts and a ban on airspace over Pakistan. The final decision on the new CEO is expected soon, with industry observers keenly watching the process.
