Singapore has introduced new initiatives to strengthen its aviation workforce through NTUC and the Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore (CAAS). The measures include the establishment of a dedicated youth chapter within the NTUC Aerospace and Aviation Cluster, which aims to support young professionals and students in aviation. Additionally, a S$2.6 million mentorship programme is set to provide structured guidance for early-career workers, focusing initially on ground handling and maintenance roles.
These initiatives are part of Singapore’s broader strategy to develop a sustainable talent pipeline in anticipation of the upcoming opening of Changi Airport Terminal 5, which will enhance passenger capacity by approximately 50 million annually. Officials from CAAS and NTUC emphasized that these efforts embody the Singapore spirit of tripartism, fostering collaboration among government, unions, and industry players to build a resilient industry.
Building a Stronger Youth Network in Aviation
The youth chapter will promote networking, peer support, early-career development, and leadership training for aviation workers aged 35 and below, including students in relevant courses. Representatives from companies like SATS and SIA Engineering underscored the importance of mentorship in helping young professionals gain confidence and technical competence in their roles. The mentorship programme, managed by NTUC LearningHub, will roll out over five years, aiming to reach 2,200 participants.
Both CAAS and NTUC leaders highlighted that ongoing sector collaboration will continue to support Singapore’s development as a leading aviation hub and ensure workers benefit from the increasing opportunities the sector offers. These efforts aim to secure a skilled workforce capable of supporting Singapore’s future growth in the aviation industry.
