Refining and chemicals company Aster, in partnership with startup Aether Fuels, is establishing Southeast Asia's first sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) plant utilizing waste industrial gases on Pulau Bukom. Known as 'Project Beacon,' this facility will convert industrial waste gases and biomethane into SAF, with construction expected to begin in 2026 and full commercial operation slated for 2028.

The plant, situated at Aster’s refinery which was acquired from Shell, aims to produce up to 50 barrels of sustainable aviation fuel daily. This innovative approach addresses a significant industry challenge—the reliance on used cooking oil, which is limited in supply—by instead harnessing waste gases and biomethane, making the process more sustainable and scalable.

Strategic and Environmental Significance

Aligning with Singapore's environmental goals, the project seeks to support the country's target of integrating 1% SAF into jet fuel consumption at Changi and Seletar airports by 2026, increasing to 3-5% by 2030. Certified under the international Corsia scheme, the initiative has garnered regional interest, including an agreement with Singapore Airlines to source SAF from Aether.

"The technology enables us to use waste gases as a reliable feedstock, simplifying scaling and demonstrating regional potential," said Conor Madigan, founder of Aether.

Employment opportunities are also expected to grow, with 24 full-time jobs anticipated during operation, and plans to expand Aether's Singapore team from two to 30 employees. Support from local government policies and initiatives plays a crucial role in fostering such advancements.

The project exemplifies Singapore's proactive efforts to lead in sustainable aviation solutions, with Aster continuing its sustainability-driven expansion efforts in the region, having recently acquired fuel retail outlets and industrial assets.
