John Lamola has resigned as the Group CEO of South African Airways (SAA), concluding a tenure marked by expansion and financial turmoil. Appointed as interim head in 2022, Lamola oversaw the airline's fleet growth from five to 19 aircraft and an increase in destinations from six to 17. His departure comes during a period of significant leadership instability and unresolved financial issues.
The airline’s recent annual report, showing a claimed R155 million profit for 2025, was flagged for discrepancies by the Auditor-General, who issued a disclaimed audit opinion citing severe deficiencies in financial controls. The airline also faces concerns over R505 million in irregular expenditures, casting doubt on its financial stability and ability to secure leases for new aircraft.
Following Lamola's departure, Transport Minister Barbara Creecy attended a board meeting where the announcement was made. Matshela Seshibe, CEO of the airline’s catering business, Air Chefs, has been appointed acting group CEO. His appointment has faced criticism due to limited experience in aviation and alleged political connections.
During Lamola’s leadership, SAA emphasized its rebuilding efforts post-pandemic and restructuring, including fleet and network expansion. However, persistent financial challenges and recent governance issues threaten the airline’s future prospects and operational stability.
