South Korea is preparing to develop its inaugural commercial vertiport dedicated to urban air mobility (UAM) services. The project involves phased construction of passenger terminals and hangars, scheduled to commence in 2027, at a site adjacent to the Kintex exhibition center located in Goyang, a satellite city of Seoul. The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport is overseeing this initiative.
The vertiport facility will serve as a data generation hub to promote the commercialization of UAM in South Korea, reflecting the country's ambitions to enhance urban transportation infrastructure. The project signifies a strategic move towards integrating vertical flight technologies into daily urban transit, aiming to reduce congestion and improve mobility in densely populated areas.
Future outlook and implications
This development aligns with global trends in urban air mobility, with many cities exploring options to incorporate electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft into their transportation networks. The South Korean project is expected to contribute valuable insights into the operational requirements and market acceptance of UAM services in East Asia.
The project is still in its planning phase, with detailed timelines and technology partnerships anticipated to be announced in the coming years. It highlights South Korea's proactive approach to becoming a leader in next-generation transportation solutions.
