Spain's Industry and Tourism Minister Jordi Hereu has advised consumers to purchase airline tickets promptly amid rising fuel prices caused by the Iran conflict. The geopolitical tension has led to significant disruptions in global oil supplies, with prices increasing roughly 50 percent since late February strikes on Iran began. This escalation threatens to escalate airline operational costs and passenger fares.
The minister highlighted that airlines are currently utilizing kerosene acquired earlier at lower costs, but acknowledged that fluctuations in fuel prices could push fares higher and potentially dampen demand. Authorities across Spain and Europe are implementing measures to prevent fuel shortages and stabilize prices.
The surge in oil prices has increased costs for long-haul European flights by over US$100, raising concerns over rising ticket prices. Spain, being the Eurozone's fourth-largest economy, maintains substantial kerosene stockpiles and higher production capacity than many counterparts. Nonetheless, experts warn that if the source countries of tourists face supply issues, Spain may not be immune to further disruptions.
Industry analysts emphasize the importance of strategic resource management to mitigate impacts on aviation costs and ensure passenger accessibility. As geopolitical tensions persist, travelers are encouraged to act early to secure airfares before potential increases.
