Spirit Airlines has ceased operations after its board approved a shutdown following failed efforts to secure additional funding, according to reports. The airline’s final flights departed late Friday into early Saturday, after being unable to reach a deal with bondholders or secure a proposed $500 million government-backed bailout.

The US low-cost carrier, which filed for bankruptcy protection twice within a year, announced cancellation of flights starting from May 1, 2026. Company CEO Dave Davis stated that despite efforts to stabilize liquidity by continuing to sell tickets, the airline's financial situation forced it to cease operations abruptly to avoid further cash depletion.

Failed Negotiations and Final Shutdown

The negotiations with the US government and bondholders reached an impasse, as discussions with Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick did not result in the expected bailout. Davis explained that the company had considered continuing operations into the following week but concluded that its cash reserves would run out too quickly and that an orderly shutdown was necessary.

The airline began canceling services on Friday evening, repositioned aircraft, and instructed crew members to return to their bases. Despite the temporary website activity for bookings, the airline grounded its fleet and closed its airport counters, resulting in job losses for employees and stranded passengers. The company cited internal contingency plans and the need for a swift, comprehensive wind-down process.
