Sri Lanka's aviation industry experienced significant growth in 2025, with increased airline operations and strengthened regional connectivity, according to Vice Chairman of the Board of Airline Representatives in Sri Lanka, Sudesh Rupasinghe. Rupasinghe highlighted efforts by carriers such as Kuwait Airways, Qatar Airways, and SriLankan Airlines to restore and enhance air services, positioning Sri Lanka as a strategic gateway between East and West.
The year saw a surge in scheduled and seasonal charter flights, supporting tourism, with airlines like Enter Air, Edelweiss Air, Red Wings Airlines, and Belavia Airlines returning or expanding their services to Colombo and Mattala. This aviation revival contributed to over two million tourist arrivals in 2025, leveraging improved air access and renewed international confidence.
Furthermore, Mattala Rajapaksa International Airport has gained prominence as a secondary airport, accommodating niche and charter flights to alleviate pressure on Colombo. Collaboration between airline associations and government bodies continues to promote sustainable growth, with policy stability and infrastructure development seen as key drivers for long-term economic benefits.
