Fleet Expansion Challenges at SriLankan Airlines
SriLankan Airlines is currently facing significant challenges in scaling its fleet due to global supply shortages. The airline, operating exclusively Airbus aircraft, needs at least seven additional aircraft to facilitate network expansion, open new routes, and increase flight frequency.
The carrier operates a fleet of 23 Airbus planes, including models such as the A320-200, A320-200N, A321-200N, A330-200, and A330-300. Despite having a commitment for four A350-900s, the airline is considering cancelling this order as delivery has been delayed and plans are to focus solely on Airbus aircraft.
Operational and Management Strategies
Chairman Sarath Ganegoda highlighted that diversifying into other manufacturers is unfeasible given the fleet constraints. To address the shortages, the airline is exploring a "special procurement process" initiated by the government, which is also shortlisting candidates for the new chief executive role.
The airline’s focus remains on expanding its route network and increasing the frequency of existing services, a move aimed at strengthening its market position. The ongoing efforts reflect a broader strategy to enhance operational resilience amidst challenging market conditions.
