SWISS has announced a new partnership with Swiss-based Metafuels, a company specializing in sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) technologies. The collaboration aims to accelerate the development and commercialization of viable SAF solutions, essential for reducing carbon emissions in aviation.
The partnership reflects SWISS's ongoing commitment to sustainability, building upon its long-standing involvement in SAF initiatives. The airline and the Lufthansa Group are exploring long-term SAF procurement contracts, especially considering upcoming synthetic fuel additive quotas scheduled for adoption in Switzerland and across the European Union from 2030.
Technological Innovation in SAF Production
Metafuels has developed the innovative 'aerobrew' process, which converts renewable energy, water, and carbon dioxide into synthetic methane and subsequently into SAF. The company is establishing a demonstration plant at the Paul Scherrer Institute in Villigen, Switzerland, and plans to develop its first commercial plant in Rotterdam. This scalable technology offers flexibility in raw materials, including biomethanol and e-methanol, and can integrate with existing aircraft infrastructure.
"Sustainable aviation fuels are a vital lever for achieving global decarbonization targets," said a spokesperson from SWISS. "Our collaboration with Metafuels underscores our commitment to sustainable innovation and supporting Switzerland's role as an R&D hub."
SWISS emphasizes the importance of SAF in its efforts to reduce fossil fuel consumption and lower emissions. By investing in efficient aircraft, sustainable fuels, and strategic partnerships, the airline aims to support broader industry goals for environmental responsibility.
