Syria's civil aviation authority has issued an Air Operator Certificate to Fly Dar Airlines, marking a significant milestone in the country's efforts to revitalize its aviation sector. This certification facilitates the airline’s entry into commercial operations, making it the first private Syrian airline to receive such approval since December 2024.
Omar Hosari, head of the civil aviation authority, stated that the certification represents more than just a formal authorization; it signals a new phase of development for Syria’s aviation industry. The government is actively pursuing infrastructure rehabilitation, modernization of navigation systems, and international standards alignment to promote sector growth and attract private investment. These measures include enhancing airport facilities at Damascus and Aleppo, with plans to enable night operations and flights in low-visibility conditions.
In conjunction with Fly Dar’s certification, Syrian Airlines is expanding its European network by initiating new flights to Copenhagen and Vienna, strengthening Syria's international connectivity. The authorities also finalized procedures for direct flights from Damascus to Amsterdam, re-establishing scheduled services to Europe after several years of disruption. These efforts are part of a broader regional strategy to position Syria as a key air transit point linking the Gulf, the Levant, and Europe, leveraging its strategic geographic location.
Looking ahead, Syria aims to increase airline capacity and route diversity, supporting economic development and integrating its aviation sector into global networks. The ongoing modernization and expansion projects demonstrate the country’s commitment to fostering a competitive and efficient air transport industry, which could serve as a catalyst for wider economic recovery.
