The Airline Association of Thailand (AAT) has recently convened a meeting with executives from six member airlines—Bangkok Airways, Thai AirAsia, Thai AirAsia X, Nok Air, Thai Lion Air, and Thai VietJet—to address increasing cost pressures within the Thai aviation sector. The discussion focused on challenges posed by global economic fluctuations and geopolitical tensions affecting fuel prices, which in turn have elevated operational costs and created industry uncertainty. In response, AAT is preparing to propose urgent government measures, including a temporary reduction in the excise tax on aviation fuel for domestic flights, to help airlines manage these costs and keep airfares accessible to the public.
AAT underscored the importance of aviation as a vital part of Thailand's infrastructure, supporting connectivity and regional economic development. The association highlighted that government support during volatile periods could bolster Thailand's competitiveness and foster sustainable growth. Moreover, the meeting reviewed progress on initiatives such as travel facilitation for Songkran 2026, with airlines planning to add demand-driven flights and offer fare reductions of up to 30% to stimulate domestic tourism.
Additionally, the report noted a significant surge—up to 100%—in Thailand-Europe airfares, largely due to disruptions caused by Middle East airspace closures amid the Israel-Iran conflict, which impacted flight routes and seat capacity. The overall tone of the meeting emphasized collaboration between airlines and government to sustain the industry through current economic challenges and promote resilience amid regional conflicts and fuel market volatility.
