Thailand is taking strategic steps to position itself as a leading global aviation hub through a comprehensive seven-point policy initiative announced by Deputy Transport Minister Phattrapong Phattraprasit. This plan aims to modernize airspace management, enhance safety, and significantly reduce operational costs for airlines operating within the country.
Following a site visit to Aeronautical Radio of Thailand Ltd (Aerothai), the minister revealed efforts to cut air navigation service charges by 30% for domestic flights, a move that comes amid turbulent energy markets and geopolitical uncertainties. Airlines are also set to benefit from extended credit periods for payments in May and June, easing liquidity pressures during a critical period.
The core pillars of the policy emphasize cost reduction, improved air traffic flow, infrastructure upgrades, and sustainability. Coordination among four main aviation agencies will be strengthened, with an emphasis on integrating environmental, social, and governance (ESG) principles into operational practices.
Key projects scheduled for completion in 2026 include the development of a NAN–SAGAG route that links Thailand with Laos and China, as well as advanced navigation technologies for overflight operations. Surachai Nuprom, president of Aerothai, highlighted current practices that enable fuel savings through route optimization and collaborative development of direct flight paths with regional partners.
Thailand manages an average of 2,300 flights daily, with the government planning to sustain modest growth through ongoing digital modernization of air traffic management.
