Thailand's Civil Aviation Authority (CAAT) announced plans to implement a passenger service charge (PSC) increase from THB 730 to THB 1,120 for outbound travelers, pending approval from the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Transport. The new rate is scheduled to take effect in four months. This move follows a decision by the Civil Aviation Board (CAB), which recently called for further studies to justify the adjustment. The studies include collecting additional data and conducting stakeholder hearings to ensure transparency and compliance with regulations.
In addition, the CAAT is preparing to submit proposals to lift aircraft age restrictions currently limiting aircraft to 16 years for commercial planes, 22 years for cargo aircraft, and 5 years for helicopters. The objective is to enhance operational flexibility for airlines and support the leasing market, which is currently experiencing a shortage of aircraft. Stakeholders note that international aviation organizations like ICAO, FAA, and EASA do not impose such age ceilings, implying the lifting will not compromise safety standards.
Furthermore, AOT's Phuket Airport expansion plans now include a private land lease option near the runway, offering space for up to 50 additional parking bays. The landowner has expressed interest in investing in the development while AOT will lease and share revenues. While details are being finalized, the project is contingent on government stability, as the country remains under a caretaker administration.
