The expanding role of sustainable aviation fuel in Europe's aviation sector

As the ambition for carbon-neutral aviation by 2050 intensifies, the industry sees a significant shift toward sustainable aviation fuels (SAF). EcoCeres, a notable producer, projects the European aviation market will grow from $56 billion today to over $100 billion by 2030, emphasizing the increasing importance of SAF in this growth trajectory.

EcoCeres manufactures SAF by processing feedstocks such as used cooking oil, animal fat, and fish fat, which results in up to 90% fewer greenhouse gas emissions compared to traditional jet fuels. Based in Hong Kong, the company collaborates with hundreds of restaurants, including McDonald's and Subway, to source used cooking oil. With an efficiency rate of 85%, EcoCeres currently produces around 770,000 tonnes annually and has plans for further expansion within Europe.

The economic and environmental implications of SAF

The adoption of SAF could influence airline ticket pricing, with estimates indicating a €42 premium on routes like Hong Kong to London for a 10% SAF blend. Importantly, SAF is less susceptible to fuel price fluctuations caused by geopolitical events. Recently, while traditional jet fuel prices doubled, SAF's prices increased by only 30%, narrowing the cost difference.

Major European airlines such as British Airways, Lufthansa, KLM, and Air France are already partnering with EcoCeres. Regulatory frameworks expect a mandated increase in SAF blending, from 2% today to 70% by 2050. Despite potential ticket cost rises, industry experts emphasize that SAF's environmental benefits and supply security are vital for sustainable growth.

Overall, the industry’s transition to SAF represents a critical step toward environmental sustainability and resilience against fuel market volatility, shaping the future of European aviation.
