AirAsia’s journey to becoming a leading airline was significantly influenced by a chance meeting early in its history. CEO Tony Fernandes recounts that the airline’s survival was initially precarious, with only two planes operating at that time.
The turning point came when Fernandes encountered the late Tun Dr Ling Liong Sik at a hotel party, an uninvited guest who listened attentively as Fernandes shared the airline's struggles. Impressed by Fernandes' passion, Dr Ling offered his support, arranging a meeting with then Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.
This intervention proved pivotal, enabling AirAsia to continue its operations and grow into an aviation powerhouse. Fernandes describes Dr Ling as approachable, humble, and patient, emphasizing his early understanding of AirAsia's potential to create a new market in the aviation sector.
Fernandes further praised Dr Ling's remarkable ability to stay grounded despite his senior position, highlighting the enduring gratitude for his assistance which helped shape Malaysia's aviation industry.
