There is a growing concern among travelers about scam airline social media accounts exploiting the Middle East crisis and ongoing flight disruptions. Criminals have been setting up fake accounts pretending to represent airlines such as Qatar Airways, Etihad, and Emirates, aiming to defraud passengers seeking refunds or assistance.
These scams typically involve fraudulent accounts with official-looking logos and generic names such as support team or guest services. Fraudsters scan social media for passengers reaching out to legitimate airline accounts and then reply with offers of help, requesting personal information and directing victims to malicious links. Once victims share their details, the scammers may attempt to debit their accounts instead of providing a refund.
Financial institutions like Santander have reported cases where customers were caught up in these schemes. Experts advise travelers to verify airline contacts through official websites and to be cautious of accounts with very low follower counts, which are often signs of fake profiles. Etihad has also issued a warning stating it will never ask for sensitive information via social media messages, urging passengers to stay vigilant and check updates on official channels.
