UAE-based defense firm Edge Group and American startup Anduril have announced a collaboration to develop the Omen, a new tailsitter unmanned aircraft system (UAS). The project aims to produce an approximately 1,000-pound autonomous aircraft designed for a variety of military missions.

The partnership involves establishing a joint engineering and manufacturing center in the United Arab Emirates, supported by a significant $200 million investment from Edge. The initial production plan includes 50 units for an undisclosed UAE customer, while units for the U.S. market will be produced in Ohio at Anduril's Arsenal-1 facility.

The Omen features a distinctive sail-plane wing configuration with canards, twin-boom nacelles, and a high tail, reflecting designs advocated by Anduril founder Palmer Luckey. Its hybrid propulsion system is based on Archer Aviation technology, offering the vehicle excess power to carry multiple payloads, and the design hints at future scalability for larger variants.

According to Shane Arnott, Anduril's senior vice president, the vehicle is aimed at disrupting traditional maritime patrol and special mission aircraft sectors, with ranges suited to the Indo-Pacific theater. The joint effort underscores a shared strategic interest in advancing autonomous military systems and strengthening defense ties between the UAE and the U.S. in a fast-growing technology market.

Defense analysts view this development as indicative of increasing private sector involvement in military innovation, combining hybrid-electric propulsion and autonomous UAV capabilities to meet evolving defense needs.
