Uber and Joby have announced the upcoming launch of Uber Air powered by Joby in Dubai, a new urban mobility service featuring electric air taxis. The service aims to allow riders to book a Joby Aviation all-electric air taxi directly within the Uber app, providing a seamless ground-to-sky travel experience. Joby’s aircraft, capable of flying speeds up to 200 mph and covering distances of up to 100 miles, is designed to transport up to four passengers in comfort, with large panoramic windows and quiet operation.
This initiative represents a major milestone in the collaboration between Uber and Joby, as they work toward integrating aerial mobility into city transportation networks worldwide. The aircraft is currently undergoing certification procedures with the FAA following extensive flight testing totaling over 50,000 miles. Executives from both companies emphasized their commitment to safety and efficiency, aiming to reduce travel times and improve city connectivity.
Background and Future Plans
Since their partnership began in 2019, Uber and Joby have focused on developing urban air mobility solutions, including acquiring and integrating the Elevate division of Uber and planning to expand their services to other major markets like New York, Los Angeles, the United Kingdom, and Japan. Additionally, the companies plan to introduce Blade’s helicopter service on the Uber platform in 2026, further broadening their multimodal transportation offerings.
This development signals a transformative shift toward future urban transportation, leveraging electric vertical take-off and landing aircraft designed for city environments where noise levels and safety are critical concerns.
