The United Kingdom is preparing for a record-breaking Christmas Eve in terms of air and road travel volume. The Civil Aviation Authority forecasts that over 335,000 passengers will pass through UK airports, marking the highest number recorded since 1972. This increase represents a 5% rise compared to last year, with airports such as Manchester and Heathrow experiencing their busiest period of the year. Manchester Airport expects roughly 75,000 passengers and 208 flights, while Heathrow is set to handle 152,000 travelers on Christmas Day, indicating an exceptionally busy peak period. EasyJet reports operating 558 flights during this festive season, emphasizing its busiest period ever. Meanwhile, road congestion is expected to peak on the same day, especially on the M25 and M5 motorways, as millions choose to travel by car. Traffic authorities, including the RAC, warn that the busiest travel times will be between 1 pm and 7 pm, causing potential delays. Rail services face disruptions owing to scheduled maintenance, with nationwide trains not running on Christmas Day and limited services on Boxing Day. Coach operator National Express is also running services to 96 destinations on Christmas Day. Transport agencies recommend travelers prepare for delays, check vehicle conditions, and stay informed about weather impacts, which are expected to increase vehicle breakdowns during colder conditions. The AA reports that December 19 was the busiest day of the season. Specific road closures, including sections of the M27 for maintenance, will impact journeys, especially between Southampton and Portsmouth. Overall, authorities predict approximately 4.2 million road journeys over the holiday period. Officials urge travelers to plan ahead and exercise caution during this exceptionally busy travel period, highlighting safety and patience amidst the predicted congestion and high travel volume.
