The ongoing conflict involving Iran has severely disrupted global jet fuel supplies, creating a major crisis for airlines worldwide. Industry leaders have reported that jet fuel stocks have declined to their lowest levels since records began, leading to increased operational costs and flight cancellations.

Tony Fernandes, CEO of AirAsia, highlighted the severity of the situation, noting that jet fuel prices have tripled, which he describes as a new and challenging experience in his career. The impact has been particularly pronounced in the UK, which researchers at Allianz Trade have identified as the most structurally exposed to fuel shortages, with approximately two million seats lost due to 13,000 canceled flights in May.

Regional Impacts and Industry Responses

While some Asian airlines are seeing increased demand due to geopolitical shifts, European and Middle Eastern carriers are facing significant capacity reductions. Lufthansa has cut 20,000 short-haul flights, and Aer Lingus has canceled hundreds of flights for the summer. AirAsia has previously sold 50,000 tickets to connect Kuala Lumpur and London via Bahrain, and remains committed to using Bahrain as a strategic hub despite the current crisis.

The situation has led to discussions around airport slot restrictions, with authorities relaxing 'use it or lose it' policies to help airlines manage their schedules amidst the shortages. Industry experts warn that this crisis could deepen if the conflict persists, potentially causing further disruptions during peak travel seasons.
