The United Kingdom is being urged by former Prime Minister Tony Blair to accelerate efforts in developing sustainable aviation fuels (SAFs) to meet the country's climate goals. A recent report from Blair's think tank highlights that current policy and development speeds are insufficient to significantly reduce emissions from the aviation sector, which contributed approximately 7% of the UK’s greenhouse gases in 2022.

The report emphasizes that while SAF mandates are increasing, notably from 2% in 2025 to 40% by 2040, progress must be hastened. These fuels, produced from oil and feedstocks, are seen as vital in the country's plan to expand airport capacity while adhering to climate commitments. The UK government also aims to prevent emissions from airport expansion at Heathrow from exceeding legal limits.

Policy debates continue, with some voices urging a shift of focus from a clean power system to reducing domestic bills. Despite these debates, the government maintains that SAF is crucial for decarbonizing aviation, with investments recently boosted by an additional £63 million to support domestic production. The Climate Change Committee predicts that emissions from aviation will increase from 7% to 11% of total UK emissions by the end of this decade, reaching 16% by 2035.

Efforts to integrate carbon dioxide removal plans with SAF policies are also being discussed, emphasizing the financial accountability of those most capable of paying for carbon removal. Overall, the report underscores the need for urgent action to develop and scale low-carbon fuels to meet ambitious climate targets and support economic growth.
