The UK government has announced a contract to purchase 23 Leonardo AW149 medium helicopters, valued at approximately £1 billion ($1.35 billion). This order aims to enhance the Royal Air Force and British Army's medium helicopter capabilities, part of broader efforts to modernize and recapitalize the UK's rotary-wing fleet. The deal ensures continued production at Leonardo’s Yeovil site and could lead to additional orders, as the initial requirement was for up to 44 helicopters.
Currently, the fleet of AW149 aircraft in military service is relatively small, with about 40 units operated by Egypt, Poland, and Thailand. The new UK order, combined with upcoming deals in Poland, Malaysia, and North Macedonia, is expected to increase the total number of AW149s to over 100 by the mid-2030s. The broader family of Leonardo helicopters, including the AW139, AW169, and AW189, is projected to grow significantly, with a global military fleet reaching approximately 467 aircraft by 2036.
The Strategic Market and Export Potential
The AW149's increased deployment is viewed as a strategic move, especially within the global market, where it is lined up for export sales. Aviation Week analysts forecast there are opportunities for the supply of more than 160 medium-class helicopters over the next decade, worth over $3 billion. These developments underscore Leonardo's expanding presence in the military rotorcraft segment and the importance of the UK as a key market for the manufacturer.
