A regional UK airline, Blue Islands, has ceased trading with immediate effect, leading to the cancellation of all scheduled flights and significant disruption for passengers. The airline, based in Guernsey, primarily operated routes between Jersey and various airports across England, and its shutdown follows the recent suspension of Eastern Airways, another regional carrier facing closure.

Blue Islands announced on its website that all future flights are cancelled and urged passengers not to travel to airports unless alternative arrangements have been made. The airline expressed regret over the inconvenience caused and directed passengers booked through partners or travel agents to their respective contacts for guidance. Jersey’s government and support agencies have stated they are actively working to support affected employees and travelers, with Jersey's Treasury minister emphasizing ongoing efforts to ensure sustainable air links for the island.

Support and Replacements

In response, Loganair, the UK's leading regional airline, announced it will operate new flights from Sunday to support those impacted by the shutdown. Jersey’s authorities confirmed that government support is available for employees and that efforts are underway to establish reliable routes through alternative airlines, ensuring essential connectivity for residents and businesses.

“I am saddened by the announcement that Blue Islands has suspended operations, and my immediate thoughts are with the people whose jobs have been affected and the passengers whose travel will be disrupted,”

Elaine Millar, Jersey’s Treasury minister, highlighted that the government is working with other airlines to maintain long-term, sustainable air links and provided reassurance that support measures are in place. The collapse of Blue Islands marks the end of an airline that operated a fleet of ATR-72 aircraft, known for serving routes crucial to Jersey’s connectivity.

The airline's closure affects several routes, and officials from Jersey have confirmed efforts to support stranded passengers and provide alternative flight options. The regional airline's shutdown also reflects wider challenges faced by smaller carriers in the current aviation landscape, emphasizing the importance of robust support frameworks for regional connectivity.
