Aircraft painting company Airbourne Colours has announced significant capacity expansion at East Midlands Airport in early 2026. The firm is executing a sizable repainting program for Austrian Airlines involving 10 Airbus A320 aircraft, highlighting the importance of aircraft maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) work for regional UK airports. This contract not only boosts Airbourne Colours’ European presence but also emphasizes the broader economic benefits of such programs for regional economies.
Since establishing operations at East Midlands in 2014, the company notes that repeat international airline contracts serve as a critical stability factor for the local job market. Simon Cracknell, the company's sales and marketing director, stated that securing ongoing work helps sustain employment levels and skills retention, which are vital for long-term workforce planning. The company's operational model reflects seasonal demand, with peak activity from October through May, supporting a two-shift system and a mix of permanent and contractor staff.
Furthermore, the company is expanding its footprint with new paint facilities at Teesside International Airport and operates a dedicated regional jet facility at Exeter Airport, addressing the need for flexible maintenance slots to reduce aircraft downtime. Cracknell also highlighted that the economic impact extends beyond direct employment, with most consumables sourced locally from UK suppliers, thereby stimulating regional supply chains. Looking forward, Airbourne Colours anticipates regional airports to become increasingly attractive MRO hubs, supported by recent investments and strategic partnerships.
Overall, the rising volume of international airline paint programs represents a meaningful employment opportunity, as carriers opt to outsource high-value work outside Europe’s main hubs, fostering economic growth in UK regional airports.
